S2 E4: Charlie Patch
3.27.23

In this episode, we are joined by Charlie Patch, who talks about his sports memorabilia business and his ongoing quest to find an elusive 1987 Michael Jordan basketball card. We talk about trends in card collecting, “Tiffany” cards, the fall (and rise) in value of Erling Haaland’s soccer cards, buying low on Sal Frelick, and more. We also compare our posters from long ago: Dave and The Who, Charlie and Jackson Pollack, Dan and Shawn Kemp. Also of note: Dan and Dave are back in the (yoga) studio, friend-of-the-pod Dana Bureau picks up a flag and marches in pro-democracy protests in Tel Aviv, and Pole Capping is on the docket for April 8.

S2 E3: Chris Shaw- Back To The Majors
2.13.23

It’s been three years since we last checked in on Lexington native Chris Shaw, and he’s back this week as he prepares to head out to Arizona for spring training with the Chicago White Sox. Chris talks about his journeys through injury rehab and professional baseball, how the recent changes to the Minor Leagues impacted his golf game, and his new walk-up song. Chris also heaps praise on fellow BC graduate and soon-to-be-Major-Leaguer Sal Frelick, reflects on the lack of female coaches in professional sports, and comments on the allure of the Savannah Bananas. Chris is the real deal and we wish him luck this season- enjoy!

S2 E2: Tali Rojem from The Edinburg Center
2.6.23

On this episode of Bedford Tavern we are joined by Tali Rojem, Director of Clinical Innovations at The Edinburg Center in Bedford. Tali talks about the challenges facing providers, families, and agencies in the midst of the current mental health crisis, and some of the innovative programs and services she helps manage at The Edinburg Center to tackle them. Dave also talks about the expansion of his practice into additional space focused specifically on mental health and wellness, and Dan asks if the answer to some of these challenges is rooted in financial resources, staff shortages, or state intervention.

S2 E1: Dawn Kociubes

The Tavern is open for a very special guest this week as Dawn Kociubes swings by for a check-in on her relentless volunteerism, her life in Bedford, and some controversial takes on Thanksgiving. Dan, Dave, and Dawn all reflect on their experiences at Brandeis, Dawn humble-brags about her Nobel Prize (sort of), and we chat about Rotary, and some of us lament not getting Taylor Swift tickets.

E9: Fahad Alden 10.27.22

The Tavern is back open this week as we welcome Fahad Alden to the pod. Fahad talks about his journey from Baghdad to Bedford, and now UMass-Lowell, with a few stops in between. We also talk about our varying degrees of concern for the future, check in on Fahad’s work with college students on health and wellness, touch base about music and pop culture, and discuss whether or not the Messi/Ronalso debate has been settled. Also: Dan’s favorite Arabic expression, Dave’s plans to buy a movie theater, Midnights, and leaving things on the top of your car.

E7: Rev. Christopher Wendell
1.24.22

As Omicron gently fades away, the Tavern reopens with none other than Reverend Chris Wendell from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bedford. Chris talks about his journey from San Francisco to Boston, how Covid has impacted congregational life, his work in theater, and what he loves about Bedford. The pod really gets going with a chat about the upcoming Winter Olympics and curling, and then quickly jumps to celebrating the timeless excellence of “The Hunt For Red October.” Also: Wordle, “Don’t Look Up”, and how Jews and Christians use palm branches for different reasons.

E6: Kevin Fudge- Improving Outcomes
1.3.2022

Kevin Fudge, Director of Advocacy at American Student Assistance, drops by to talk about college admissions, life coaching, the murky world of financial aid and higher education finance, and, of course, the Philadelphia Eagles. What’s really up with college loans? Who’s responsible for the student loan debt crisis? Should community colleges be free? Why in America do both education and health care cost more than anywhere else? If you were waiting to hear about higher education once (and still?) being a tool of social reproduction and perhaps even perpetuating white supremacy, you’ll want to listen to this one.
